A Self Esteem, a pop project

Self Esteem has been described an "experimental pop project". It is the brainchild of Rebecca Lucy Taylor, formerly of Sheffield-based indie band Slow Club. Rebecca’s lyrics are strong, her voice confident and expressive, whether singing soft and slow, the soulful or the powerful ballad. Her music is minimalist, weaving skilfully through each song, enhancing and enriching the sung melody. The name Self Esteem came out of a conversation Rebecca was having with a friend as they tried to find a name suitable for what she wanted to do. The two finalists were "Sex Appeal" and "Self Esteem". The latter name was chosen, Rebecca says, because she is trying to find her own self esteem with her solo career. A tireless writer and performer

Self Esteem’s first single, "Your Wife", was released on the Kick and Clap record label. The label’s owner, David MacLean, is also a member of Django Django. Self Esteem sang on "Surface To Air", a single from Django Django’s "Marble Skies" album. Self Esteem is no stranger to the hard slog of getting yourself established it the music business. Her former band, Slow Club, released five indie pop albums and worked tirelessly until they went into hiatus in 2017. Self Esteem is a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums and guitar and sings. Her first album, "Compliments Please", contained the single "Your Wife", which is a mix of styles. There is a Middle Eastern flavoured percussive beat that provides a surprisingly melodic underpinning for the lyrics, while Rebecca’s voice is then supported by soft keyboards. "I’m Shy", on the other hand, is more conventional and consists of voices and a single acoustic guitar that gives a more folky feel to the music. Self Esteem writes her songs by either creating beats then working the song around them or recording the vocals acapella before creating the musical landscape around the song. A lot going on

Self Esteem cites Perfume Genius and Kanye West as influences, and she also remembers a music teacher who encouraged her to continue singing. She describes herself as adaptable, and this is certainly true. Her emphasis may be on hip-hop, RnB and urban music, but as her work proves, there is a lot more going on and her unofficial title of "experimental" is apt.
