Northampton Saints: return to Gallagher Premiership 2019 - 2020
Founded in 1880 by Reverend Samuel Wathan Wigg as a youth club for the boys of St. James' Church, the club's origins soon earned them the nicknames of 'Saints' and 'Jimmies'. By 1905, Saints boasted a first England player in Harry Weston, and it wasn't long before local hero Edgar Mobbs became captain of his country.
The '50s and '60s were a golden era for Saints: producing players such as Jeff Butterfield, Dickie Jeeps, Ray Longland and Don White but tough times fell on them in the next few years. An intensive rebuilding process got the East Midlands side back on their feet, and by the '90s Saints were once again in the top tier.
In 2000, the club claimed their first major honours with victory in the European Rugby Champions Cup (then known as the Heineken Cup), and further continental honours followed in 2009 and 2014 with triumphs in the European Challenge Cup. The team has enjoyed recent domestic success too, with an Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2010 and the Gallagher Premiership in 2014
