Ricky Gervais: world class talent to play six "Work in Progress" dates in London
One of the UK's best-loved comedians; actor, writer and stand-up legend Ricky Gervais has conquered the world with his hilarious and dark sense of humour. He is perhaps best known for writing and co-directing TV mockumentary series The Office with Stephen Merchant, while playing cringe-worthy boss David Brent. His talents aren't limited to TV though, with acting credits in Hollywood, his own line of children's books and one of the most popular podcasts ever: The Ricky Gervais Show with Merchant and Karl Pilkington. He has won seven BAFTA Awards; five British Comedy Awards; three Golden Globes; and was named the third most influential person in British culture in a 2004 poll.
2007 stand-up show Fame became the fastest selling UK show in history (with 100,000 tickets for the London dates selling out in just nine minutes), but since then Gervais stand-up gigs have been few and far between. He returned in 2016 with a one-off show in London and, to the delight of fans, announced a massive world tour called Humanity for 2017.
The Humanity tour - which included a massive 13 dates at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London - was a huge success for Gervais and marked a first return to stand-up for seven years. In 2018, Gervais will play six "Work in Progress" gigs in London, which will see him develop material for his upcoming SuperNature tour. Ricky Gervais: Britain's most famous comedian
Born and raised in Reading to a working class family, Gervais formed his unique sense of humour at home, influenced by his mother's light-hearted wit. After his studies at university, he joined the new wave rock outfit Serona Dancing, who had a minor hit in the Philippines and went on to manage the unsigned Suede before they made it big. The comedian started working for XFM in the late '90s, hiring Stephen Merchant – who would later be his comedy partner – to be his assistant. Numerous TV appearances and a host of roles followed, including Golden Years, Meet Ricky Gervais and his first hit show The Office.
An increased profile allowed his stand-up career to take off in the early 2000s, with themed tours Animals and Politics some of his most highly commended work. In the last few years, the joker has written and acted in Extras, Emmy Award-winning Derek as well as numerous Hollywood movies. In 2017, for the first time in seven years, Gervais returned to the stage with fresh material for his large-scale, critically acclaimed tour Humanity.
