Richmond Flying Squirrels TicketsRichmond, Va. had been home to a Minor League baseball team since 1965. That was, until 2008 when the Richmond Braves announced that they would be moving to Gwinnett. Fortunately, the city's time without a team would be short-lived, as it was announced that the Connecticut Defenders would be relocating to Richmond for the 2010 season. The team known today as the Richmond Flying Squirrels was originally created in 1972 as the West Haven Yankees. The team's first manager was Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox. By 1980, the West Haven team was an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The team won five championships during their stay in West Haven, Conn. In 1983, the Athletics moved the team to Albany, N.Y before the Yankees would become the parent organization once again. Legends such as Bernie Williams and multi-sport star Deion Sanders played for the Albany Yankees during the late '80s and early '90s. The Yankees returned the team to Conn. in 1995 before dropping the team in 2002. The San Francisco Giants took over as the parent organization that year and moved the team to Richmond in 2010.
