A Sporting Gift from England
Thought to have its foundations in the British game of rounders, the earliest known record of the sport suggests that "Bass-Ball", as it was then called, was played as far back as the mid-1700s. It's claimed that English immigrants brought the game over to Canada in the early 1800s, where it began to spread into America, and the codification of the Knickerbocker Rules by members of the prestigious gentleman's club was set into motion. Hoboken, New Jersey, was the host of the first officially recorded baseball game in the history of the United States. The New York Nine defeated the Knickerbockers by 23-1 in four innings under these rulings, which went on to become the basis of the modern laws of the game. Baseball is also well-established in other countries, being a major sport in the Dominican Republic and Japan, which is widely regarded as displaying the highest quality league outside of the United States. Talents naturally cross over, with Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani transferring from the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, of the NPB's Pacific League (the highest level of the sport in Japan), to the LA Angels, who are always strong contenders in Major League Baseball.
A Game Like No Other
Baseball is distinct in that there is no set time limit to each game. The clock can never run out. It's over when it's over. There's also a strong demand for focus and mental strength on an individual level. Despite being a team game, a key player, like the legendary batter Babe Ruth or the major league's all-time leader in runs and bases (as of 2018) Rickey Henderson, can make or break an important game. It's a psychological battle between the pitcher and the batter, where fielders watch and wait, ready to pounce when the time is right or astonish the crowd with a show-stopping diving catch. However it comes, Baseball is always jam-packed with excitement, blistering tension and, most importantly, hot-dogs!
