Based out of San Diego, California, Wavves is a no-fi, DIY rock production consisting of band leader Nathan Williams on vocals and guitar, Alex Gates on guitar, Stephen Pop on bass and Brian Hill on the drums. Weaving together a beautiful mess of distorted sound, the band's musical influences are drawn from the pop punk, noise rock and indie rock genres. With lyrics that poke fun at goth culture and explore themes of boredom, weed and the beach, the music of Wavves channels California slacker culture and turns it into something charming. Catch the band live on the Wavves tour at venue stops throughout North America.
Wavves first formed in 2008 as the solo project of lead vocalist and guitarist Nathan Williams. At 21 years old, he had just quit his job at Music Trader, where he'd been a clerk. He used his free time to skateboard, write posts about hip hop on his blog, Ghost Ramp, and make music using GarageBand. He spent about one month recording music in his bedroom and eventually produced two full albums of material. Because of overdriven inputs, the songs sounded quite messy, but Williams rolled with it and posted the songs online. The material found acceptance among the online music community, with some even claiming that it was the "next big thing." These early albums, Wavves (2008) and Wavvves (2009), were also well-received critically and led to a record deal with Fat Possum.
In 2010, Wavves released its first official studio album, King of the Beach, which met with significant success, rising to No. 168 on the Billboard 200 chart as well as No. 28 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
After the success of King of the Beach, Williams decided to start his own label, transforming his one-time music blog, Ghost Ramp, into a full-fledged music label. He released the band's new EP, Life Sux, through the label in 2011. Eventually, the label would sign a number of other musicians, including Cloud Nothings, Trash Talk, Antwon and Williams's two side projects, Spirit Club and Sweet Valley.
In 2013, Wavves achieved its highest ever ranking on the Billboard 200 with Afraid of Heights, which rose to No. 81. V followed in 2015, released in conjunction with Warner Bros. Records. The peppy, sunshiny album achieved a No. 133 ranking on the Billboard 200. Wavves' most recent album, You're Welcome, hit music store shelves in 2017, accompanied by a US tour alongside Blink-182 and the Naked and Famous.
