The Game: collaboration king
Growing up in hip-hop hotbed Compton, Jayceon Taylor has spoken in interviews about his "dysfunctional" upbringing, which saw him end up in foster care and get tangled up in Los Angeles' gang scene. Like many of his musical peers, rapping offered a way out of his hardships, something inspired by a chance meeting with Eazy-E of hip-hop outfit NWA.
According to legend, Taylor took a methodical approach to launching a music career, studying classic hip-hop albums and cherry picking various aspects in order to develop his style. It was a tactic that paid off: by 2002 one of his mixtapes caught the attention of both Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Dr. Dre, the latter of whom signed him to his Aftermath Entertainment label.
After being placed alongside 50 Cent in rap stable G-Unit, he gradually built his profile with a run of cameo appearances before releasing his debut album The Documentary in 2005. Going straight to Number One on the US album chart, the LP went double platinum and paved the way for follow-ups Doctor's Advocate and LAX, with The RED Album and Jesus Piece following in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Having collaborated with the great and the good of the urban world, from Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and J Cole to Fat Joe and Odd Future, the razor-sharp wordsmith is considered a cornerstone of the modern rap scene and a key player in the resurgence of West Coast hip-hop.
