Football's roots can be traced back as far as the Medieval period in England, when 'mob football' was contested by rival towns and villages. As the game evolved over the following centuries, teams struggled to agree on a set of universally accepted rules until the formation of the first Football Association in England in 1863. That was followed by the first of many professional football competitions in 1888, and most of the laws of the game introduced by the governing body still stand today.
