Formed in 1929, Serie A is the top tier of the Italian football league, which boasts such greats as Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan. Check out the range of Serie A tickets currently on offer at StubHub.
Initially split into regional groups, Serie A became the national top-flight division in Italian football that we know today in 1929. Inter Milan won the inaugural season and have since gone on to lift the trophy on more than 15 times, a number similar to that of their local rivals, AC Milan. However, it's Juventus FC who have by far and away been Italian football's most successful team, finishing top of the league on more than 30 occasions. Since 2005, the champions have been awarded the Coppa Campioni d'Italia trophy, while during the following season, the team's kit features a small coat of arms known as the scudetto alongside the Italian tricolour. The number of clubs competing in Serie A has differed over the years, with a low of 16 featuring from 1934-1943 and a high of 21 from 1947-48. But since 2004, the division has welcomed 20 clubs into the fold each season. In 2016, Serie A became one of the first top-flight leagues to embrace the use of video replays. The only team to compete in every Serie A season since its formation is Inter Milan, however Juventus, Roma and AC Milan have all very nearly been ever-present, too, while other regulars include Fiorentina, Lazio, Torino, Napoli, Bologna, Sampdoria, and Genoa. All these clubs have been crowned champions over the course of Serie A's history, as have Cagliari and Hellas Verona, with Turin proving to be the most successful city. With 647 appearances, defender Paolo Maldini was named Serie A's most-capped player - a tough record to beat - meanwhile Silvio Piola was recognised as having an all-time goal scoring record of 274. Alongside a whole host of homegrown internationals, including the majority of Italy's world tournament-winning squads, Serie A has also welcomed numerous greats from all corners of the globe. Argentina's Diego Maradona, France's Michel Platini, England's Paul Gascoigne, Germany's Jürgen Klinsmann, and the Netherlands' Marco van Basten are just a few of the bona fide legends that have graced Serie A since the 1980s.
