The Academica Experience
Academica may be just a small team huddled away in the sleepy town of Coimbra, but looks can be deceiving. Hidden beneath the veneer of a regular ol' team is, in actuality, the oldest football team on the Iberian Peninsula. Academica is over 130 years old - and in all that time their fame has only grown. Academica tickets are available now to be purchased or sold at StubHub.
Iberia's Oldest Football Club
For the majority of their history, Academica has competed in Portugal's top league. They have been relegated a few times, but overall they've remained in the top flight of Portuguese football. Widely considered to be one of the most popular teams in Portugal after Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP, Academica matches are both personal affairs and public spectacles. Academica has seen its fair share of trials and tribulations through the years. For instance, the 1930s were the golden years for the club, when they had some of their greatest triumphs. The 1970s, on the other hand, were some of their worst years, such as in 1972 when the club was relegated to the second division of Portuguese football for the second time in its history. The 80s weren't much better and saw Academica flip-flop between the first and second divisions. The truth of the matter is, for much of their recent history, Academica has flitted between the top two divisions - but that doesn't mean they aren't one of the most entertaining teams to watch in Portugal. After all, the mere fact that they are one of the most popular teams in the country is proof of how fun their matches can be. Purchasing Academica tickets is like getting tickets to a modern Greek play; you'll never know if it will be a tragedy or a triumph - and that's part of the fun.
Commonly referred to as the "Briosa" (Pride), Academica is certainly the pride of Coimbra. Also known as "Os Estudantes" (The Students), the Briosa embody a unique combination of pride and humility: They are humble because they remain students of the game, and prideful because they know they are the oldest team around with the longest history - and that it is absolutely something to be proud of. The team is truly a paradox. They are proud but humble and they triumph over the second division yet struggle to maintain a presence in the Primeira Liga. Each season is like a television drama with one twist after the next. They'll have one year up and one year down, financial trouble this year and success the next. They are a dynamic team that is always changing and that is what makes them such a joy to watch live. Academica tickets are available now to be bought or sold on the StubHub website.
