The Segunda División was established in 1929 by football governing body the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Although the RSFF is still a part of its administration, the Segunda División has been organised by La Liga since 1984. The league is comprised of 22 teams that play each other twice throughout the 42-match season, once at home and once away. Three teams are promoted to Spain’s top-flight league each year. First and second place are promoted automatically, whereas 3rd to 6th place enter a play-off round. The winner of the playoffs earns that priceless 3rd spot in La Liga. As well as losing three teams from the top, the bottom three teams in the Segunda División are relegated to Segunda División B at the end of the season. This also creates new competition, consisting of those relegated from La Liga who’ll do everything in their power to get back there and those promoted from Segunda División B, who’ll do everything in their power to stay or even go up again! It’s tactical, theatrical and simply gripping to watch, so get behind your favourite team and buy Segunda División tickets right here on StubHub before they sell out!
