Campeones Cup TicketsThe Campeones Cup (or Champions Cup in English) is the only match in the world that brings together the previous champions of Major League Soccer — the most popular league in the United States and Canada — and Liga MX — the highest tier of competition in Mexico. The match is the centerpiece of a huge multi-event effort to deepen and enhance competition and rivalry along with fostering a collaborative spirit between the two North American leagues. The inaugural Campeones Cup took place in 2018 between Toronto FC and Tigres UANL at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario. Led by two goals from Jesus Duenas, the Tigres emerged victorious by a score of 3-1. Though the match does not count toward any standings, the winning club does receive bragging rights and a sleek new trophy. If you want to catch some of the best soccer clubs in North America, then you can purchase Campeones Cup tickets at StubHub, a leading source for live events.
How are the participating clubs determined? The representative of the MLS is simply determined by the winner of the MLS Cup held around October or November. However, the Liga MX side is a bit more complicated. The Liga MX season is divided into two equal halves. The first half, known as the Apertura, takes place between July and December. The second half, known as the Clausura, takes place between January and May. Though the winners of the Apertura and the Clasura actually receive separate championships, the two clubs do come together at the end of the season in the Campeon de Campeones to determine an overall winner. The winner of this match plays in the Campeones Cup.
When does the Campeones Cup take place? The Campeones Cup is typically held around August or September. This places it in the middle of the Apertura competition of the Liga MX season and the regular season of MLS. The 2020 Campeones Cup will feature a matchup between the overall 2019 to 2020 Liga MX winner and the 2019 MLS winner Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington. A more detailed schedule of the Campeones Cup with exact dates and times should be announced closer to the start of the actual match when the Liga MX winner of the Campeon de Campeones is crowned.
Who was the winner of the previous cup?In the 2019 Campeones Cup, which was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United FC from the MLS beat Club America from Liga MX by a score of 3-2. The clubs entered halftime tied 1-1, thanks to early goals from Emerson Hyndman and Renato Ibarra. In the second half, Jeff Larentowicz from Atlanta and Roger Espinoza from Club America scored quickly in a two-minute span to tie the match again at 2-2. Josef Martinez brought home the game-winning goal in the 65th minute on a penalty kick.
How is home field determined? Thus far, the Campeones Cup has always been held at the home stadium of the MLS team, but the format is subject to change at any point in the future.
What is the Campeones Cup like? The Campeones Cup is a rare opportunity for MLS fans to attend a match against the very best of Liga MX at a home stadium. Though the cup itself is nothing more than an exhibition match, it still features a championship atmosphere with an electric crowd and a trophy ceremony at the end of the match. International rules apply to the game.
