History

With the amount of evolution that all three of these massive genres have undergone in the past few years, it may be surprising to some that they have really only been around for about sixty years. Rock and roll emerged as the biggest and most celebrated genre of music beginning in the 1950's, drawing heavily on elements and influences from other genres such as jazz, blues, classical, and folk. There are a multitude of sub genres that fall under the rock label such as indie, alternative, surf, Brit, garage, and many more, with almost all of these arising in their own generation with their own style. Pop music, the term used for popular music, arose shortly after rock did, as it is derived from rock but is much more eclectic in nature. The genre of pop borrows elements from genres such as country, hip-hop, dance, latin, rock, and others, while maintaining a style that is something unique in it's own right. Hip-hop emerged starting in the early 1970's New York, and began as an urban style that often utilized rap, turntables, breakdancing, and graffiti, but currently really specializes in rap and DJing. The genre has evolved plenty over the years to involve a slew of newer methods and styles such as sampling. But no matter which genre is the music of your choice, there are a cavalcade of incredible artists that are worth checking out for their respective sound.
