The Strokes - New Music and Tour Dates Expected for 2016
After last releasing an album Comedown Machine in 2013, fans have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of new material from this iconic group following the news that they will play at the Governors Ball Music Festival in their native New York this June. The Manhattan band didn't tour their last record, so with frontman Julian Casablancas hinting new material is in the works, it may not be long until they bring their distinctive new wave garage rock to UK shores once again. Of course, alongside the exciting prospect of as-yet-unheard music, fans can expect to hear all the classics such as 'Last Nite' and 'Juicebox' live and loud again. The Strokes Biography - Icons of Garage Rock Set To Make Their Return
Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi and Fab Moretti came together at school in Manhattan and were joined by Albert Hammond Jr and Nikolai Fraiture while attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts together. They began to perform at iconic music venues across the city, rehearsing a set that would include future hits likes 'Barely Legal' and 'The Modern Age', as well as 'Last Nite', which was promptly released for free via the NME magazine website. That sparked considerable fan interest, and after a bidding war between labels, the band released their debut LP Is This It on Rough Trade records. It was an instant critical and commercial success, named the best record of 2001 by both Entertainment Weekly and TIME, and going on to also be named album of the decade by NME in 2009. It has since sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.
Evoking different musical styles, from Bob Marley to Blondie, the band released second album Room on Fire in 2003, receiving further praise from the critics and earning them a place on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for the first time. After extensive global tour dates, fans had to wait until 2005 before hearing new material from the group. Single 'Juicebox', from the album First Impressions of Earth, laid down a marker, with fans excited to hear a new sound demonstrably heavier than their previous work. Casablancas and the boys headlined a number of summer festivals in 2006 before retreating to the studio once again to work on a new record. It would be 2011 before Angles saw a release date, but its modern take on '70s rock resonated with fans, particularly on single 'Under Cover of Darkness'. Comedown Machine arrived in 2013 but the band decided to pull a media blackout with no promotion or tour, and instead members focused on individual projects. Now nearly three years on, the group have reunited for live dates in their home country. Should UK concerts follow, you'll want to make sure you pick up The Strokes tickets at StubHub UK.
