A Football Club from Humble Beginnings
La Coruña is the second most populated city and municipality in Galicia, an autonomous community in the north west of Spain, right above Portugal. A bustling port town, La Coruña is known as a key distribution point for goods from the region, as well as its football club, Real Club Deportivo La Coruña. Football was introduced to La Coruña in 1902 by José María Abalo after returning from his studies in England. The game quickly gained popularity and by 1906, Deportivo La Coruña was formed by members of the Sala Calvet gymnasium. A year later, King Alfonso XIII granted the club its Royal (Real) status. The 1920 Games in Antwerp saw the Spanish national team compete for the first time with relative success, increasing the popularity of football throughout Spain. A national competition was then planned to kick off in 1928, where Deportivo La Coruña failed to make it into the first ever Primera Division, now known as La Liga, and thus began its career in the Segunda División. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, all official competitions were suspended. Play resumed in the 1939-40 season, and the following year, Deportivo La Coruña finally reached La Liga for the first time in its history after beating Murcia 2-1 in the playoffs. This would prove to be the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club over the decades, as they eventually earned the respect of national and international competition. With Deportivo La Coruña FC tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub, you can join in the ride and see all the action live from the front seat!
Growing Towards National and European Success
During the club's ups and downs in and out of La Liga during the 1940s, the Estadio Municipal de Riazor was built. An all-seater venue holding over 30,000 spectators, the stadium opened in 1944 with a league game against Valencia CF. More ups and downs followed, although great players emerged, such as Pahiño, local hero Luis Suarez Miramontes and a selection of youth academy players including José Luis Veloso and Jaime Blanco. The year 1973 marked a significant low period for the club, which struggled in the Segunda División and fell to the Segunda División B, third tier Spanish football, albeit for a short period. By the 1991-92 season, they were back in top-flight football, and the following year, they qualified for European competition for the first time after coming in third place behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. They won their first Copa del Rey in 1995 and in 2000, Deportivo La Coruña won its first Spanish title! Another Copa del Rey title came later in 2002, where it became safe to say this battle-hardened squad had arrived amongst the best in Spain. You can now see them live, with Deportivo La Coruña FC tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub!
