Patrice and the Roots of his Music
Patrice is a singer of both Sierra Leone and German descent. He describes his music as "sweggae" although it's hard to define the exact genre. Patrice's sound is a mash-up of soul, hip-hop, rock, blues and reggae. His positivity and philosophy of life are contagious onstage; consequently, this humble artist sold out his shows early on simply by word of mouth, even before releasing an official album. Patrice is an artist who truly found inspiration from his roots and the musicians he grew up listening to. After his father's death, Patrice let the music of Bob Marley and Bob Dylan become like surrogate fathers to him. He learnt through their music and their messages. Patrice's sound carries all the flavours of where he came from and his world experience.
Schedule
Patrice consistently sells out shows across Europe, and he's no stranger to playing festivals. He's played at the Summerjam Festival in Cologne, the Reeds Festival in Switzerland and the Cape Verde World Music Festival, just to name a few. Other gigs along the way include Le Trianon, Magic Mirror, Le Bikini, Chabada and a few others in France. He also stops at the Koln Philharmonie in Cologne, Germany.
Trivia
Patrice has two children: a son named "Nile," born in 2005, and a daughter named "Billie-Eve," born in 2010. Although Patrice was once married to Billie-Eve's mother, the singer Ayo, they later separated. After Patrice broke out on his own, he began operating a recording studio called "Supow" out of Cologne, Germany. He has used this studio to produce many artists like Keziah Jones, Cody Chesnutt and Curse.
Singer
Singer and songwriter, Patrice grew up in Germany in 1979 as Patrice Babatunde Bart-Williams. His father was from Sierra Leone, and his mother was German. He grew up listening to artists like Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. He began writing songs from a very early age, and he played in many different bands, including the "Afro-beat" reggae group Bantu. Patrice performs both solo and with his band: The Supowers.
Breakthrough
Patrice's career really took off in 1999 after Lauryn Hill heard his debut EP Lions, which Matthias Arfmann from Bantu produced. Hill invited Patrice to join her on her Miseducation European Tour. Shortly after that, Patrice attracted the attention of major record labels. In 2000, Sony released his first full-length album: Ancient Spirit.
Hit Albums
In 2005, Patrice saw his third album Nile, named after his son, reach the top on the Austria Albums Top 75 music charts and the France Albums Top 150 chart. Its peak position was number four on the Germany Albums Top 50 chart, where it stayed for a week.
His single "Clouds" appeared on the German Top 100 chart, with its peak position at number 64. "Clouds" also reached the Austria Singles Top 75 chart as well. Patrice's single "Another One" had a three-week run on two different charts, including the Austria Singles Top 75 and the Germany Singles Top 100.
Show Experience
The audience seems to always start clapping as the first lick of a note hits the air. The use of lighting and shadow at his concerts always adds to the overall atmosphere, and pumps up fans with Patrice tickets. During slower moments, Patrice will sway to the rhythm, partly in shadow. When the beat picks up, the lights will begin to flash frenetically as he jumps around the stage, encouraging the audience to sing and dance along. Patrice not only sings; he also plays the guitar, switching from time to time between nylon and steel-strung instruments.
