O2 Academy Brixton - South London's Music Hub

This iconic south London building began as a cinema and theatre in 1929, but by 1972 had been converted into a rock venue. Despite economic troubles resulting in plans to demolish the structure and redevelop the space, it was reopened in 1983 as Brixton Academy, taking advantage of the flourishing local reggae scene and soon started to attract artists across all genres of music to perform. Since then, it has maintained popularity due to its position as one of the largest non-arena venues in London and regularly hosts top artists throughout the year.

Despite its roots in cinema and theatre, the building's successful reinvention as a concert hall in the '80s has seen it become a staple venue for some of the best names in contemporary music ever since - resulting in some iconic artist performances over the years. The Smiths played their last ever gig there in December 1986, while Madonna played a special show to promote her 2000 LP Music, which was streamed online to nine million people. In addition, countless acts have recorded live albums on site, including Motorhead, Chase and Status, Pixies and Franz Ferdinand.
