The band first made their mark on when frontman Benjamin Burnley recruited the talented Aaron Fink and bassist Mark Klepaski. The pair were originally part of up-and-coming group Lifer, a band already signed with Universal, but left upon the strength and conviction of Burnley's songwriting. Inspired by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Temple Pilots these musicians crafted a fiery post-grunge sound that their fans fell in love with. After a local radio DJ helped finance their debut self-titled EP, the group signed with Hollywood Records in 2002 to produce their debut album Saturate.

Collaborations with Billy Corgan and a support tour with Evanescence helped to raise the group's profile, leading to a number of successful albums. While the band's sole surviving member is Burnley, his spectacular vocals have helped the group to retain impressive consistency throughout. 2015 saw the release of Dark Before Dawn, the first new material since a 2011 Best of LP, and they subsequently gained a number one spot on the Mainstream Rock chart with lead single 'Failure'.
