Manchester Academy: something for everyone
On the grounds of Manchester University, Manchester Academy was built in 1957 and 1990. The older building used to house the Students' Union, while the newer structure was purpose-built as a concert venue when the Manchester music scene started growing rapidly at the end of the twentieth century. The first concert to be played back in 1957 was by Humphrey Lyttleton and His Band; this was the beginning of a long connection with jazz, for which the Academy is still famous today. Academy 2, Academy 3 and Club Academy are all located within the older building and range from a capacity of just 470 up to 950 in the larger Academy 2. The inaugural concert of Academy 1, opened in 1990, was played by Buzzcocks - this venue now has a capacity of 2,600 and has undergone several periods of refurbishment. Manchester Academy prides itself on its accessibility work, sustainability measures and charity donations: each year the venue picks at least one local or arts-based charity to partner with. Offering the full range from intimate gigs to a larger concert capacity, Manchester Academy is popular with a wide audience and, despite its location, is by no means only for students. Tickets for Manchester Academy will delight music lovers of all ages.
