Before that, he was an associate coach for the 2016-17 season. Mike Gabinet is the first former Mavericks player to be a head coach of the team. He was a defenseman at UNO from 2000-2004. Gabinet was a Los Angeles Kings draft pick and played professionally in Europe and in the AHL for several years. He embarked on a coaching career in 2012. During his first season behind the bench, Mike Gabinet led the Mavericks to a 17-17-2 record overall. Gabinet's assistant coaches include Paul Jerrard, Kirk Thompson and Jake McKamey.
