Explore the evolution of this child prodigy
One of the highlights of the 2000 Grammy Awards was the performance of a young pre-teen by the name of Julian Lage, and for those outside of the jazz universe, this was the first time many had seen his amazing talents performed live. Born in Santa Rosa, California, Lage started playing guitar at the tender age of five and was already performing at age six. He was the subject of a documentary entitled "Jules at Eight", which introduced his phenomenal skills to the world, so by the time he turned 12, he was already accustomed to the accolades and recognition that came with his otherworldly gifts. His guitar talents are ranked up there with greats such as Stanley Jordan, Plini and Jason Richardson>. Julian Lage's live performance with Carlos Santana at the Concord Pavilion in 1997 has become the stuff of legend, and he went on to join the faculty at Stanford University's Jazz Workshop at the age of 15, graduate Berklee College of Music in 2008 and release his long awaited debut album "Sounding Point" in 2009, which earned him a Grammy nomination a year later. The Julian Lage Trio and other collaborations
"Gladwell" was the title of the second album from Julian Lage, who by this time had become a seasoned musician, having already added such noted jazz luminaries as Pat Metheny, Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner to his list of collaborations. His later work went on to explore other interests such as the "Avalon" album (with Chris Eldridge), featuring bluegrass and folk renditions, as well as "Room", a free-flowing set of improvisational material with Nels Cline in 2014. The Julian Lage Trio was formed in 2016 and their first album, "Arclight", was followed by "Live in Los Angeles" later that year. Although recognised as a jazz artist, Lage characterises himself as a blues guitarist who started playing jazz in order to understand the proper mechanics and limitations, if any, of his instrument. Undoubtedly, most peers and jazz aficionados can relate to such a sentiment, which is completely fine with the multitude of fans who are drawn to the artistry and awesome gifts he possesses and more than happy to witness him play… regardless of the genre.
