A new take on the story of Jack the Ripper
Premiering in 2019 in London, Jack the Ripper is a modern opera written by Iain Bell and librettist Emma Jenkins. It follows the mostly fictionalized lives of the famous serial killer's victims, a group of women living in a doss house in the cripplingly poor area of Whitechapel. At the end of the 1880s women from this area had few chances in life, but a mother and grandmother are trying to teach the youngest generation of their family to read so that she might have better prospects one day. Yet as the women struggle to empower themselves, Jack the Ripper (whose character is never seen on stage) descends and begins picking off their friends and relatives one by one. It's a powerful struggle of women against men, poverty against unseen powers, despair against hope - extremely apt in current times, it reflects the gender politics and various other struggles we read about so much in the news today. The 2019 premiere of Jack the Ripper by ENO was in fact part of an entire season dedicated to women, which also featured re-imagined versions of Salomé, The Merry Widow, and Porgy and Bess. Whether you're keen on the political side of things or simply interested to see a new opera, you can find your tickets to Jack the Ripper on StubHub.
A compelling and thought-provoking production
The original cast of Jack the Ripper included renowned opera singers such as Lesley Garrett, Susan Bullock, and Dame Josephine Barstow, who have been involved in many well-received performances by the ENO. As well as providing an intriguing look at the forgotten lives behind the well-known story, the cleverly staged production will take you on a journey into the dark depths of 19th century East London, a world of desperate poverty immortalized in works by Charles Dickens. While there were several Jack the Ripper suspects, the brutal murders (all of which were carried out on women) remain unsolved to this day, spawning many legends, works of fiction, and now this unusual operatic work. While many have questioned the propriety of immortalizing such an infamous figure yet further, this is an important production that looks at the repercussions on ordinary people and finally gives his victims a voice.
