Great West Football TicketsOver the NCAA's football history, there have been many conferences that combined programs from nearly all geographic regions of the US. The Great West Conference (GWC) was a perfect example. Back when it was still in existence, the GWC included schools from both the East Coast and the West Coast. In addition, it had members from central states as well as the southern states. After operating for nine years, it dissolved in 2013 after four out of five of its final members joined other conferences. Those members included schools such as the Chicago State, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley University. During its existence, it was home to many great teams that would compete in exciting matchups. The fact that teams from far ends of the country would play further contributed to the fierce rivalries. Since you can no longer obtain tickets for GWC football games, you should look into other conferences. You can get the best football tickets at StubHub.
Where did the Great West football games take place? The GWC matchups took place all over the country since there were schools in the conference from nearly all regions. Teams would often have to play opponents who were located thousands of miles away. For instance, whenever the Utah Valley Wolverines competed against the New Jersey Highlanders, the visiting team would have to go through a lengthy trip to get to the site of the game. Nonetheless, this helped make the regular-season schedule very exciting and unpredictable. The rivalries of fans that were often separated by many states were still extremely powerful.
What were some of the top games for the Great West football?Due to the fact that conference champions were chosen based on a five-game record, most teams managed to win at least once. The most successful program, however, was Cal Poly with four conference victories that facilitated a 14-win record with only three losses. The next two were UC Davis and North Dakota State. Whenever any of these three teams would play against each other, fans were in for a great show characterized by exquisite football.
What were the biggest universities that played in the Great West football?Out of the final schools that were in the GWC, the largest one was Utah Valley University. With more than 31,000 students, it was easily the biggest program to take part in the final few years of the conference's existence. Another fairly big one was the University of Texas-Pan American. It had more than 19,000 active students. As of 2015, however, the Texas-Pan American became a part of the University of Texas at Brownsville. After joining their forces, the two schools converted to the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.
Why did the Great West Football stop operating? The main reason why the Great West football seasons ended was due to the dissolving of the entire conference. In 2011, the official GWC stopped sponsoring football events. Due to this, four out of five members who were still involved left and joined some other Division I conferences. The Big Sky was the most popular alternative as quite a few of the teams went there soon after the end of the defunct GWC.
