Nephilim's title is a reference to magical creatures from Biblical times -- giants who watched over and could change the world. McCoy made sure his band had a distinctive appearance that reflected his worldview; his heroes were magical creatures and spaghetti Western characters. That's why the band fashioned themselves after spaghetti Westerns, down to the weather-beaten dusters that they are frequently seen in. This antiqued look was achieved by throwing Mother Pride flour all over their jackets. Their image owes quite a lot to not only Western movies but also various alternative religions, and have incorporated all sorts of magical references into their lyrics.

Band

Fields of the Nephilim first began infiltrating British consciousness with its goth sound in 1984. It was the brainchild of lead vocalist McCoy, whose childhood in the company of very religious parents led to an interest in the occult. He combined his traditional religious upbringing with all things dark and witchy to create a unique sound.

After the original band broke up, frontman Carl McCoy made headlines as a soloist using the alternative spelling Nefilim for his albums. Fields of the Nephilim got back together in the early 90s and still makes music today, although McCoy sometimes credits "ghost" musicians as the accompanists to his vocals.

Breakthrough

The band's climb to success was slow and steady until 1987, when it released the hit single "Blue Water." This song pushed the band onto the UK charts, due in no small part to the release of a wild, hard-to-follow music video -- one of the first in the genre. The following year, Fields of the Nephilim hit No. 28 on the UK charts with the release of another single, entitled "Moonchild."

Hit Albums

Fields of the Nephilim have had four singles in the top 5 of the UK Indie chart: "Preacher Man," "Blue Water," "Moonchild," and "Psychonaut." Their 1987 album DawnRazor hit the No. 1 spot on the UK Indie album chart. Several of their albums have also been featured in the UK Top 50, including The Nephilim, Elizium, and Earth Inferno.
