After they disbanded in 1985 the frontman embarked on a solo career, finding success with debut album Hope and Despair. After a stint in the producer's chair the ambitious singer released his universally recognised 1994 single 'A Girl Like You', which proved to be his breakthrough success in both the UK and the US. It later found success in movie soundtracks - most notably in The Secretary and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

However, Collins was stopped in his tracks after suffering a major cerebral haemorrhage in 2005, leaving him in intensive care. After recovering from the illness, he was left with aphasia, an impairment of speech and comprehension.
