Debbie Reynolds – a real American sweetheart

Born for the bright lights of Hollywood
Descended from Irish, Scottish and English ancestry, Reynolds was born in El Paso, Texas in 1932 to a poor family living in a shack. They later moved to California, where Mary Frances Reynolds began her transformation into Debbie Reynolds, the star we all know and love today. At sixteen she won the Miss Burbank beauty pageant and soon after signed a contract with Warner Bros. She moved to MGM two years later and starred in a whole host of musical movies, including "Three Little Worlds", which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for "Most Promising Newcomer" in 1950. Her real breakout role, however, was in the hit film "Singin’ in the Rain", where she starred alongside the genius Gene Kelly. Reynolds went on to feature in more Hollywood classics such as "How the West Was Won", "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (for which she received an Academy Award nomination), "Charlotte’s Web" and many, many more. Yet while Debbie Reynolds became a favourite of Hollywood’s most prolific film directors, she also saw success on Broadway, where she was nominated for "Best Actress" for her performance in the musical "Irene" at the 1973 Tony Awards, and graced the stage in productions such as "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Woman of the Year". Topping the charts
Reynolds not only captivated audiences on the screen, but her voice set her apart from the rest. Her recording of "Tammy" topped the charts for five weeks, earned a Golden Record and was one of the best-selling singles of 1957. Reynolds’ rendition reportedly inspired Olivia Newton-John’s performance in "Grease". Later, she would perform two shows a night at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas for around three months of the year for ten years, belting out hit after hit for thousands of fans – and she’s still at it today!
