Charlotte Hounds Info
Despite getting out of the box in a hurry at 4-0 (including a 25-7 demolition of the Boston Cannons) in 2018, the Hounds finished at an even 7-7, falling short of the playoffs. As a result, it was announced that Jim Stagnitta — the franchise's winningest coach — would not return in 2019. In three years at the helm, Stagnitta led the team to one playoff appearance and set the franchise record for most wins (eight) in a season. Charlotte selected 20 players in the 2019 MLL Supplemental Draft, adding seven attackers, seven midfielders, five defenders and a goalie to a roster that is welcoming returning players Adam Osika, Scott Hooper and Jake Withers.
Charlotte Hounds History
On only its second season (2013) in the league, Charlotte would go all the way to the MLL championships game, facing the Chesapeake Bayhawks for the Steinfeld Cup. However, the Hounds were edged, 10-9, as the Bayhawks claimed their league-record fifth championship. In 2016, Charlotte finished 8-6 and clinched its second playoff appearance in franchise history, before falling to the Ohio Machine, 16-10, in the MLL semifinals. After a 6-8 finish in 2017, Jim Stagnitta coached the Hounds to a 4-0 start in 2018, marking the best start in franchise history. Players/coaches honored by the league include Stagnitta (2016 Coach of the Year), Joey Sankey (2015 Rookie of the Year) and Mike Chanenchuk (2016 Most Improved Player).
Charlotte Hounds Home: Memorial Stadium
With a capacity of 17,000, American Legion Memorial Stadium opened in 1936. Home to the Charlotte Hounds, it is located in 7th Street adjacent to the Grady Cole Center. Prior to the construction of nearby Bank of America Stadium in 1996, the multi-use facility was Charlotte's largest outdoor stadium, and remains the largest municipal venue in the city.
About Major League Lacrosse
In 1999, Jake Steinfeld (as in “Body By Jake”), Dave Morrow and Tim Robertson joined forces to form Major League Lacrosse. MLL began play in 2001, capitalizing on the growing demand for world-class lacrosse in the US market. Heralded for its up-tempo style of play and innovative approach, which includes a 60-second shot clock and a two-point arc, the league proved a near-instant success. The league originally consisted of six teams, the Baltimore Bayhawks, Boston Cannons, Bridgeport Barrage, Long Island Lizards, New Jersey Pride and Rochester Rattlers, which were divided into the American and National Divisions. Some of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport have played in the MLL, including John Grant, Jr., Casey Powell, the Gait brothers and Greg Cattrano. Today, the league consists of nine teams: the Bayhawks, Cannons, Atlanta Blaze, Charlotte Hounds, Dallas Rattlers, Denver Outlaws, Florida Launch, New York Lizards and Ohio Machine.
