Adapted from the movie of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, "Calendar Girls" is a contemporary musical featuring brand new music from Take That's chief songwriter Gary Barlow. You can both buy and sell Calendar Girls tickets on StubHub now.
"Calendar Girls" tells the story of a Yorkshire Women's Institute group who decide to raise funds for a leukaemia charity following the death of a member's husband from the disease, and they do so by posing completely nude for a calendar, attracting attention from around the world in the process. Originally a 2003 film starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, "Calendar Girls" was initially adapted for the stage as a play in 2008 but then transformed into a full-blown musical seven years later. Gary Barlow, best known for being the driving force behind boyband phenomenon Take That, composed 20 new songs for the production, while directing duties went to the original movie's screenwriter, Tim Firth. Following a 2015 premiere at the Grand Theatre in Leeds, the show moved to The Lowry in Salford before transferring to the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End. "Calendar Girls" was crowned Best Regional Production at the WhatsonStage.com Awards and received three nods at the Olivier Awards in 2017, including the much-coveted Best New Musical. "Calendar Girls" the musical may not have had any Oscar-winning Dames in its cast like "Calendar Girls" the movie but it has still boasted plenty of familiar faces during its run. Following a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018, the show headed out on tour across the UK in which "Loose Women" panellist Denise Welch appeared as major's wife Celia, ex-"This Morning" presenter Fern Britton portrayed chairwoman Marie and "Hi-de-Hi" actress Ruth Madoc played retired teacher Jessie. The main cast of women's institute characters was completed by Sara Crowe as Ruth, Anna-Jane Casey as Annie, Rebecca Storm as Chris and Karen Dunbar as Cora. Other notable cast members included Derek Elroy, Isabel Caswell, Phil Corbitt, Sebastian Abineri and Tyler Dobbs. Whether you're a fan of the original, a Take That aficionado or simply a lover of feel-good musical theatre, "Calendar Girls" is sure to entertain.
