The interpretations allow the musicians to pump new vitality and emotion into well-worn classics from various genres -- and audience get to watch this magic in motion.
Besides playing in their home building, the Flagey, the group often plays concerts in other Brussels venues, such as Bozar (the Centre for Fine Arts) and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. They also make trips to other cities in Flanders, including the 't Kuipke in Gent, as well as Bruges, Leuven, and Hasselt. As one of the most prestigious orchestras in the region, they regularly tour capitals across Europe.
Tours of the UK include shows at The Sands Centre in Carlisle, Edinburgh's Usher Hall, Cadogan Hall in London, St. George's Hall in Bradford, the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, Middlesbrough Town Hall, and Bristol's Colston Hall.
Conductor Michel Tabachnik has worked with other notable conductors like Pierre Boulez. Tabachnik later made appearances as conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Tokyo NHK, and the Orchestre de Paris. Henry Raudales, one of the two concertmasters who serves alongside Tabachnik, hails from Guatemala and began playing violin at the age of four. He now plays a violin made in 1787 by Guadagnini.
Founded in 1935, this orchestra has a long and rich history that includes working with some of the most renowned composers of the past century, including Bartok and Stravinsky. The current conductor and musical director of the orchestra is award-winning Swiss composer Michel Tabachnik, who has been with the company since 2008. Under Tabachnik's guidance, the orchestra has continued to focus on the 20th century works most enjoyed by their audiences. They are also famous for playing movie soundtracks, including the score for The Artist, which won both an Academy Award and Golden Globe.
The Brussels Philharmonic has been a highly regarded orchestra since its inception, but its world fame reached new levels when the score they played for the Martin Scorsese hit movie The Aviator won a Golden Globe in 2005. This soundtrack was composed by Howard Shore and was nominated for a Grammy, a British Academy of Film award, and various other honours.
In addition to their success playing film scores, the company of musicians also records albums under their own label. These recordings include CD's of compositions such as Debussy's La Mer, Dvorak's New World, Tchaikovsky's Pathétique, and Beethoven's Eroica.
