As You Like It is part of a trio of Shakespearian plays that have been restaged for the modern theatre by the ever-inventive Royal Shakespeare Company London and taken to audiences at the family-friendly Barbican Centre in London. Physical comedy set to a new musical score

As You Like It has been turned into a comedy musical for this production, and it features all kinds of characterisation twists to support this reinterpretation. Rosalind((played by Lucy Phelps), her trusty Celia, and the fawning Orlando have all be updated for modern audiences, perhaps encountering this classic comedy play for the first time. The cross-dressing heroine is a great help in all of this, as Shakespeare fans will have predicted already. The production has been directed by Kimberley Sykes, who has already done woven similar magic over the Queen of Carthage and Dido. There has been a stronger emphasis placed on the physical comedy aspects of the production, and its has also been enhanced by an original music score written by Tim Sutton, and the skills of some very entertaining puppet masters, under the director of puppets, Mervyn Millar. If you haven't experienced a modern Shakespearian production, and think that the classical theatre like this is staid and impenetrable, get some As You Like It tickets – you'll get a very pleasant surprise indeed.

Versatility from the Royal Shakespeare Company

As mentioned above, As You Like It has accompanied two other Shakespearian plays on this run. It's being presented with another one of the playwright's most wickedly ingenious gender role comedies, The Taming of the Shrew. The third member of the trilogy is Measure For Measure, with Phelps once again taking a leading role as Isabella. In fact, most of the roles across the three productions are shared by pretty much the same cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which brilliantly showcases the versatility of the actors. For those of you who relish the thought of seeing all three shows, this is a mouth-watering prospect in itself. It's not often one gets to enjoy the talents of the same actors employed in such different ways in juxtaposition. Phelps has been especially notable and has been singled out by critics in many reviews as a main reason to see the show.
