A City and its Team: Thriving and Surviving

Almería is a city steeped in history. Situated in the autonomous community of Andalusia, it was founded by Calipha Abd-ar-Rahman III of Cordoba, who built the Alcazaba, or Citadel, upon which Almería's name is based: Al-Mari'yah, or, the watchtower. By the 10th and 11th centuries, the city built considerable wealth in trade and the textile industry, before falling to Christian domination in the late 1400s and being completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1522. Rebuilding didn't properly commence until the 19th century, and after being ravaged once again during the Spanish Civil War, Almería became recognised as one of Europe's main vegetable producers, regaining its economy in the modern day. Almería FC didn't come about until the midst of this modern period. It was founded in 1989 and suffered a shaky start in and out of the Segunda División, Segunda Divisíon B and the Tercera Divisíon, Spain's second, third and fourth tier football leagues.
