The Birth of Las Califas
Córdoba is situated in the heart of Andalusia, an autonomous community in the south of Spain. Initially a Roman settlement, it was colonised by Muslim armies and became the capital of the Islamic Emirate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty. The second Umayyad Caliph of Córdoba, Al-Hakam II, helped the city become a centre of education, with libraries, medical schools and universities all around the area. Córdoba was recaptured by Christians during the Reconquista, after a siege led by King Ferdinand III of Castile lasting a number of months. Mosques were converted into churches and a new way of life began in the city over the following centuries. Córdoba's historic centre was named a world heritage site in 1984, thirty years after the formation of its football club Córdoba CF, nicknamed Los Califas (The Caliphs). The history of the city lives on in its iconic green-and-white-striped football club, which you can watch live with Córdoba CF tickets available to buy and sell via StubHub now!
The Beautiful Yet Cruel Game of Football
Los Califas played eight seasons in La Liga in the 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1964-65 season, their third outing in the competition, Córdoba CF went undefeated at home, where they only conceded two goals! A series of ups and downs followed over the next forty years as the club made its way in and out of the Segunda Divisíon and the Segunda Divisíon B, Spain's second and third tier football divisions. A spark was ignited when former Spanish international Albert Ferrer became the club's new manager, leading them to a play-off final win over Las Palmas, with Ulises Dávila scoring the all-important decider. The victory brought Córdoba CF back to La Liga for the first time in 42 years. A huge sigh of relief for those dedicated fans! Unfortunately, the bliss didn't last long after a poor performance in the 2015-16 season, where they were finished off cruelly by the mighty Barcelona FC (an 8-0 loss!) and sent packing back to the Segunda Divisíon. Can they do it again? Or will it be another painful 42 years? You could be there to witness the moment that changes everything, just like that Dávila goal! Córdoba CF tickets are available to buy and sell via StubHub now, so don't miss out!
