Record Breakers from the Get-Go!
The official foundation of Las Palmas came about in 1949 as a result of a merger between the five clubs previously established on the island: Arenas Club, Marino Fútbol Club, Atlético Club de Fútbol, Club Deportivo Gran Canaria and Real Club Victoria. The idea was to create a football club powerful enough to keep native players on the islands, as opposed to seeking other opportunities for careers in mainland Spain. This proved to be a pretty successful idea. In their first season in the Tercera División, now the fourth level of the Spanish football system, Las Palmas finished second, gaining a promotion to the next year's Segunda División, in which they ranked third. This shot them up into La Liga the following year, making them the first club in Spanish football history to earn consecutive promotions in the first two years of existence! Impressive stuff by the team from Gran Canaria, only the third largest island in the archipelago, with a population of around 800,000 to choose from. They surprised everyone back in the day, and they might just surprise you. But first you need Las Palmas tickets… They're available to buy and sell via StubHub now!
Migration to Europe
Las Palmas' first season in La Liga ended as soon as it began. They were relegated back to the Segunda División, although only for another year, after which they had a good six-year run finding their feet in the big leagues. The club had their most successful period in the mid-sixties under ex-Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Vicente Dauder, where they were led to a third-place finish behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Four players of this squad also made the Spanish national team that went on to win the 1964 Euro tournament. They did one better in the next season, finishing second to winners Real Madrid, a placing that would qualify them for a European competition for the first time ever! Las Palmas would play in Europe a further two times throughout the sixties and seventies, coming up against teams from England, Germany, Slovakia and The Netherlands. This really is a football club full of surprises, so don't miss your chance to see something special (like their 4-2 win against Real Madrid in 2001, perhaps…).
