Cheer on the Granada FC players
Granada FC was founded in 1931 and showed instant promise, winning a regional competition in its first season and rapidly rising through several promotions to reach La Liga - the top level of Spanish football. Alternating between there and the second division until the 1980s, the club was widely viewed as a strong competitor on a national level and had its biggest success in 1959, when it just lost out on the Copa del Rey (then known as the Copa del Generalisimo) to FC Barcelona. Beset by financial problems in the early 2000s, Granada FC was even on the brink of closure before being rescued by Udinese Calcio, who loaned many of its players and helped bring the club back up to the second division. In 2011, a win in the promotion play-offs saw the club promoted back to La Liga, where it remained until 2017. Despite the rocky history of Granada FC, the club is firmly back where it belongs. What will the future bring for Granada FC?
The Granada FC stadium, Nuevo Los Cármenes, was opened in 1995 with an inaugural match against Real Betis FC (won 4-1 by Granada FC) and a capacity of just over 16,000 seats. After the club made it back to La Liga in 2011, however, the stadium was expanded by 6,000 seats to celebrate the team's leap in popularity. Some of the most exciting matches to be held in the stadium are those of the derby between Granada FC and their main rivals Malaga FC - matches in which the two rivals go head to head are bound to be emotionally charged. When playing at home, the team is instantly recognizable in the red-and-white-striped Granada FC kit, which has a history as convoluted as that of the club itself. Originally blue and white, the team accidentally became red and white when no other colours were available after the Spanish Civil War. Switching between horizontal and vertical stripes for years, horizontal was eventually settled upon in 2005 - and so the iconic Granada FC shirt was born. There's no knowing what the future will bring for this club, but you can definitely watch it happen live, with tickets for Granada FC available now to buy or sell on StubHub.
