Born with a visual disability and left completely blind after a football accident, singer-to-be Andrea Bocelli found solace in music from a young age. He began by studying piano aged six, before moving on to the trumpet, flute, saxophone and other instruments. His singing talent soon became obvious when he tried to emulate the voice of his idol Franco Corelli.
After deciding to pursue a career as a tenor, he took to the stage at small concerts and bars at the age of 14; and his breakthrough moment came when Italian musician Zucchero Fornaciari discovered him performing in a bar. After hearing his voice, he asked the blind pianist to sing a demo tape which he sent to Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti was dumbfounded with the talent of the unknown vocalist, and played a role in Bocelli signing to Sugar Music record label.
From this humble beginning, the Italian tenor went on to become one of the world's most popular opera and pop singers; renowned for his tear-jerking, powerful collaborations. Bocelli is particularly beloved for his duet "Time to Say Goodbye" with Sarah Brightman, which sold over 12 million copies, making it one of the bestselling singles of all time.
