The Script tour: Danny O'Donoghue announces huge 2018 UK concerts to support fifth album Freedom Child
Brilliantly blending pop, rock and contemporary R'n'B sensibilities to form what they describe as 'Celtic soul', The Script are one of the most popular and commercially successful bands of the 21st century. With record sales in excess of 29 million, four number one albums and multiple sell-out world tours, the Irish trio have been at the top table of UK pop rock for almost a decade.
After teasing fans with a series of tasters and singles throughout 2017 – including "Divided States of America" and "Written in the Scars" – the band officially announced the lead single off their fifth album (Freedom Child) would be "Rain", which was released on 14 July and followed by the full album on 1 September.
The record debuted at number one in the UK charts, and the band will be following up their success with a huge UK and Ireland tour in the spring of 2018.
The lads will play 14 shows around the UK and Ireland throughout February 2018, including Manchester, London and Glasgow. They'll also stop at: Leeds, Belfast, Dublin, Nottingham, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Cardiff and Birmingham – meaning fans up and down the country (and on both sides of the Irish Sea) will have a chance to see The Script live. The Script: Irish rockers return with another number one album
Made up of vocalist and former The Voice judge Danny O'Donoghue, drummer Glen Power and guitarist Mark Sheehan, The Script first made waves in spring 2008 with the release of "We Cry", "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" and "Breakeven": a series of singles that would later appear on their hugely successful debut album.
Having been subsequently chosen to support both Paul McCartney and U2, their rise to superstardom was confirmed by the success of their sophomore album Science & Faith. The record was the band's second number one, lead to a nomination for best International Band at the 2011 Brit Awards, and helped them sell-out Dublin's 50,000 capacity Aviva Stadium.
2012 saw the release of their third album, #3, that included a collaboration with O'Donoghue's fellow The Voice judge will.i.am on the single "Hall Of Fame", later going on to become their first UK number one single. Their #3 World Tour lasted 11 months and proved to be the inspiration for their fourth album (No Sound Without Silence), encouraging them to try to put on record the larger-than-life sound they achieve while performing live.
The album went on to become the band's third number one, before a short hiatus followed as O'Donoghue recovered from throat surgery. The much-anticipated fifth album – Freedom Child – was yet another number one, with a huge UK tour set to follow in spring 2018.
