The Invincibles, Tom Finney and Bill Shankly
Officially formed in 1880, Preston North End FC made history nine years later when they won the FA Cup and the first ever English Football League in the same season, becoming the first double winners in the process. The team dubbed the Invincibles successfully defended their league crown a year later and remained in the English First Division for much of the next 70 years, adding to their trophy cabinet with another FA Cup win in 1938. The club boasted two bona fide greats in their mid-20th Century period, future Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly and England international Tom Finney, who spent his entire glittering career with the club, netting 187 goals in 433 appearances. Both men have stands named after them at Deepdale, the historic ground which remains the world's oldest continuously-used professional stadium. Since 1961, the club have bounced around the leagues outside the top flight, winning championships in the third tier in 1971 and 2000, and the fourth tier in 1996. After recovering from various financial problems, the team achieved promotion to the Championship in 2015. You can both buy and sell Preston North End FC tickets on StubHub.
A largely homegrown North West team
Since their return to the second tier of English football, Preston North End FC have shown encouraging signs that they could return to the top flight in the near future. In 2018, they finished seventh, just one place and two points outside a play-off position. Former Norwich City manager Alex Neil assembled an impressive largely homegrown side which included several players with Premier League experience, including former Leicester City midfielder Paul Gallagher, ex-Norwich City keeper Declan Rudd and one-time Aston Villa forward Callum Robinson. Defenders Ben Davies and Josh Earl also proved that the club's youth academy remains one of the strongest in the North West, while Republic of Ireland's Sean Maguire and Alan Browne and Wales' Billy Bodin ensured that the squad also had plenty of international experience too.
