The history of Loftus Road
The football ground was founded and built in 1904, when it was used by local amateur team Shepherd’s Bush FC, however, Queen's Park Rangers have played at the stadium since 1917. Over the decades, the stadium has undergone a number of refurbishments to maintain it as one of the country’s top stadiums and it recorded its highest ever attendance in 1974 when more than 35,000 people watched a game between the home side and Leeds United. In 1981, the ground made history by becoming the first professional British ground to use artificial turf, although this was changed to natural grass by 1988. As well as being the home of one of London’s top football teams, the stadium has become an important part of the local community. In 2017, it hosted the Game 4 Grenfell celebrity football match following the nearby disaster, and in 2019, it changed its official name to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium in support of a local community support group.
