When the Saints go marching in
Southampton FC moved from their home of more than a century, The Dell, to St. Mary's Stadium on its completion in 2001. Boasting a capacity of just over 32,000, the ground also features dozens of corporate boxes and four executive suites named after Southampton greats Matt Le Tissier, Mick Channon, Terry Paine and Bobby Stokes. Alongside hundreds of Premier League and Championship games involving the home side, the stadium has also welcomed several major European teams through its gates including Steaua Bucharest, Sparta Prague and Inter Milan. It's also hosted various international matches including 2-2 draws between England and Macedonia and Japan and Nigeria, England Under-21 games against Republic of Ireland and Norway and an England Women's 2019 World Cup qualifier against Wales. In 2015 it hosted the longest continuous football match ever played, a 102-hour encounter featuring players from local charity Testlands Support Project. You can catch the Saints in action by purchasing tickets for the St. Mary's Stadium on StubHub.
Not just a football stadium
Since the mid-'00s, St. Mary's Stadium has also become a popular concert venue, with some of the biggest acts from the worlds of pop and rock taking their tours there. Notable names include Sir Elton John in 2005, Nickelback in 2006, local hero Craig David in 2007 and Bon Jovi in 2008. In 2017 Robbie Williams brought his "The Heavy Entertainment Show Tour" to the venue, and a year later The Rolling Stones did the same with their "No Filter" European trek. St. Mary's Stadium also hosted a premiere of James Bond flick "Casino Royale" in 2006 and a tribute to rock and roll icon Elvis Presley a year later, and has also been the home of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance since 2008. It's also regularly used as a prom setting for various local schools, while the Northam Stand is used by a local support centre designed to help children outside class and a council organisation aimed at providing youngsters with vocational training.
