First opened in 1929 as a super cinema modelled on the Roxy in New York, this Grade I listed building has gone through a number of changes in the last century. With a capacity of over 3,000 though, it still retains its place as the UK's largest non-sporting theatre. Managed by Ambassadors Theatre Group, the venue plays host to a wide variety of different performances each year, including a number of touring musicals. In the next few months the site is gearing up to welcome shows like The Bodyguard, Shrek The Musical and Hairspray to its stage.
Live Events at Edinburgh Playhouse
The theatre has seen great success in the last few years, with the recent Wicked two month residency giving the show its largest UK audience to date. This year will also see shows like Priscilla Queen of the Desert make its return, along with Blood Brothers, The Rocky Horror Show and Annie. The venue also plays hosts to a number of comedians and live acts, such as Kevin Bridges and magician Dynamo.
The Playhouse can be found near to the top of Leith Walk, close to the eastern end of Princes Street in the heart of the historic city. Edinburgh is easily accessible by train via Waverly station and has an efficient bus service that runs close by to the theatre.
