Whenever people from Glasgow think of rock music, Barrowland is often the first place that immediately springs to mind. It is, however, much more than just a rock venue. A haven for rock artists

Back in 1958, a deadly fire gutted the building. Not to be beaten, in true Glaswegian fashion it was rebuilt through tough grit and determination. Today, it stands as a symbol of hope for all those involved in the arts - especially music. 2018 marked the venue's 60th anniversary of the fire, and more people than ever were clamouring to buy Barrowland tickets. The autumn season of that year saw plenty of stars flock to Glasgow to perform their greatest hits. Amongst them were former X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan, "Verve" lead vocalist and solo artist Richard Ashcroft and Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit. The latter is a former Brit award nominee, with their fourth studio album ("Ruins") reaching a then-high place number three in the 2018 UK charts. As Christmas approached the rock artists kept coming, with the one and only Lily Allen coming to Glasgow on the back of the release of her latest album at the time ("No Shame"), which ultimately became her fourth to reach the top ten in the UK album charts.

Barrowland: burnt but not beaten

This place originally opened as the Barrowland-Ballroom in 1934. After the war it grew in stature until a major fire saw it close for two years, between 1958 and 1960. At the start of the 1980s, there emerged more of an emphasis on music, bringing top talent to a respected venue in a major city. Famously, in 1983, it was used as the setting for Simple Minds' "Waterfront" - that was when people really started flocking there. The coming years saw just about every "big" artist imaginable perform, with Oasis, U2, David Bowie and Snow Patrol just a few of the big names who performed Barrowland. These days, the venue has other uses as well, with comic conventions becoming a fast-growing event of interest. So what are you waiting for?
