Cat Power Biography - Spellbinding Singer Songwriter

Charlyn Marshall experienced an unconventional childhood, travelling tirelessly across the Southern states of America and moving between the houses of her mother, grandmother and blues musician father. Her chaotic upbringing didn't leave much time to make friends and Marshall sought comfort in her stepfather's record collection, including the smooth soul sounds of Otis Reading and the roots rock of the Creedence Clearwater Revival.

She moved away from her family at the age of 16 and taught herself to play a 1950s Silvertone guitar, and soon fell in with a crowd of experimental musicians after settling in Atlanta. They formed a band under the name 'Cat Power' after seeing the moniker emblazoned on a trucker's cap and, upon moving to New York in 1992, Marshall took the name as her solo stage alias. During an opening set for alternative singer Liz Phair, Cat was scouted by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, who took her under his wing and helped her craft her debut album Dear Sir. Strong reviews from the music community led her to record follow up albums Myra Lee and What Would the Community Think, spawning the cult hit singles like 'Nude As the News'.

Around this time, Cat developed a reputation for delivering unpredictable live shows and took a short hiatus to address her personal problems, before returning to the scene with new album Moon Pix in 1998. Her highly polished LP You Are Free became one of the highest rated records of 2003, featuring appearance from Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, helping her attract a colossal fan base. In 2005, she released her signature soul record The Greatest, which is often voted one of the best LP's of the decade. Cat returned reinvigorated to the charts in 2012 with her ninth studio album Sun, and her tales of relationship woe won over fans old and new.
