None of this would be possible without the brains of Andrew Usher, whose distillery business enabled him to donate the funds necessary for a new concert hall in the Scottish capital. Andrew Usher never lived to witness its opening in 1914 but, in shunning Victorian design influences, the winning construction company created the most simplistic, classically designed theatre in the country. In time its distinct features - including curved walls and a dome - would influence other projects for its aesthetic and acoustic qualities. The artists that pass through the doors of the Hall are also inspired by Scotland's greatest creative minds, with sculptured panels depicting the likes of Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson amongst others. Of course, music is just one creative milieu on offer at the venue. In the past, it has also hosted theatrical, political, religious and sporting events, making it one of the most diverse locations in Scotland.
