Great bands form at parties
The group formed in Edinburgh when Colin Newton (drums), Roddy Woomble (vocals) and Rod Jones (guitar) met at a party. The trio quickly struck up a close bond and in no time were hanging out and playing music together. They recruited a bass player by the name of Phil Scanlon and performed shows throughout Scotland, developing a popularity within the underground indie rock scene. Scanlon would soon leave the band, and this was the first of many adjustments to the line-up, however the core trio remained strong. Idlewild released their first studio album in 1998, titled 'Hope Is Important', which was celebrated for its dynamic singalong pop choruses and chaotic guitar riffs. The release propelled them to a wider audience and saw them tour with rock outfit Manic Street Preachers. The group went on to record a further five albums over the following 11 years, including 'The Remote Part' (2002) and 'Make Another World' (2007). Leaders of the alternative rock movement
The indie rockers have had an extensive influence on the Scottish music scene and helped advance the popularity of alternative rock throughout the United Kingdom. Idlewild were part of a movement that helped Scotland become known for its world class rock and punk environment, with Time Magazine claiming Glasgow was 'Europe's capital of rock music' in 2004. The band has long had a strong connection with the city and in 2008, they performed the entirety of their first four albums at intimate shows over consecutive nights. Well known for their grungy origins and harmonious lyrics, the group has been a recipient of the Song Writing Award at the Scottish Music Awards. Over the years, Idlewild have been likened to Welsh outfit Feeder The Band and Northern Irish rockers Ash, who also rose to popularity in the 1990s and symbolised the post-punk movement.
