The Cure: post punk heroes celebrate 40th anniversary

One of the most beloved British bands in history, The Cure burst onto the post punk music scene in the late 1970s led by ghoulish front man Robert Smith. With their signature 'anti-image' of black clothing, towers of teased hair and smudged makeup, they became near-instant style icons, inspiring a slew of bands with their unique brand of gloom rock.

Releasing a string of decade defining singles in the 1980s including "Boys Don't Cry" and "Friday I'm in Love" and "The Lovecats", they've become one of the most enduring bands in history, selling over 27 million records to fans spanning continents and generations. In 2018, they celebrate 40 years of music with a one-off show at BST in London's Hyde Park in July.

The Cure: 1978-2018

Formed in the wake of Britain's punk explosion in the late 1970s, The Cure stood apart from their peers from the very outset. Taking inspiration from groups that presaged goth subculture including Siouxie and the Banshees, Robert Smith and co. made a statement with their black clothes and backcombed hair; differentiating themselves by emphasising mood and expression over anger and energy. They scored their first top 20 album with Seventeen Seconds in 1980, marking themselves as one of the most important bands on Britain's burgeoning post punk scene and beginning a huge commercial success which would last the duration of the decade.

The minimalist jangle-pop of their early albums had a profound influence on fellow English bands like Joy Division and The Smiths, while whooshing synths and haunting melodies made later record Faith (1981) a precursor to goth subculture. However, it's their challenging 1982 album Pornography that is hailed as their magnum opus.

With tracks like "Boys Don't Cry", "A Forest" and "Lullaby" weaving elements of psychedelia, pure pop and synth-music together to spectacular effect, the band's success continued way into the '90s, and they're still hailed as one of the most influential groups in existence today.
