People the world over know Stevie and the wonder of his talent as a child prodigy, blind since shortly after birth. Among the many accolades for the R&B, funk, soul, jazz, and pop musician, whose live performances are as energetic as his songs, are 25 Grammy Awards, over 30 US Top 10 hits and an Academy Award for Best Song. Rolling Stone readers voted him as the ninth greatest musician of all time. Wonder is also noted for his dedication to political causes as an activist and was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2009.
The Wonder and the MiracleStevie Wonder's birth name is Steveland Hardaway Judkins. He was the third of six children born to Calvin Judkins and songwriter Lula Mae Hardaway on May 3, 1950, in Saginaw, Mich. Unfortunately, his premature birth and exposure to the oxygen-rich atmosphere of the hospital incubator led to retinopathy of prematurity. The condition is the cause of his blindness. Nonetheless, he learned to play the piano, harmonica and drums at a very young age and performed with friends on street corners as well as at parties and dances. His parents divorced when he was 4, and his mother took him and his siblings to Detroit. In 1961, he sang "Lonely Boy," a song he wrote, to Ronnie White of the Miracles. White promptly took Wonder and his mother to Motown for an audition. CEO Berry Gordy wasted no time in signing Stevie to Motown's Tamla label. Producer Charles Paul gave him the moniker Little Stevie Wonder and, because of his age, drew up a contract in which royalties would be held in a trust until he turned 21. Meanwhile, he and his mother were given a small stipend to cover their expenses. A tutor would be provided for Stevie while he was on tour. One of Wonder's most memorable recordings is "Fingertips," recorded live at the Regal Theater in Chicago when he was 12 years old. Decades of hits after hits followed, and from these humble beginnings, Stevie Wonder has since become a household name.
