Orbital: retro electro-dance duo announce new album and UK tour

Named after the M25 motorway which orbits Greater London – the road that linked numerous weekend raves in the '80s – electro duo Orbital were among the original superstar DJs of the 1990s. Over a career spanning more than two decades, they have progressed from recording songs on their father's cassette deck to playing at internationally renowned music festivals such as Glastonbury and V Festival (rebranded in 2018 as Rize).

Orbital split up in 2004 – but re-formed in 2008 – before splitting "for the final time" in 2014. To the delight of fans, however, the duo got back together again in 2017 for a series of UK shows, and have promised this time they are "back for good, with new music and an upgrade of the legendary live show that transformed festivals across the world."

Orbital: rave heroes return in 2018

Inspired by early '80s punk and electro, brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll recorded their first track, "Chime", on their father's cassette deck in 1989. The track soon became a rave scene anthem, reaching number 17 on the UK charts and earning Orbital an appearance on Top of the Pops. This early success set the tone for the rest of their career, with their second self-titled album maintaining a spot in the UK album charts for 15 weeks.

However, their real breakthrough came in 1994 when the duo played an acclaimed headline performance at Glastonbury festival, a show that went on to be included in Q Magazine's Top 50 Gigs of All Time and 50 Bands to See Before You Die.
