State of the art sound
The Nottingham Royal Concert Hall began construction in 1980 on the site of the old Empire Palace of Varieties, a historic entertainment venue which welcomed legendary performers such as Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin to its stage before closing in 1958. Funded by Nottingham City Council, who wanted a brand-new world-class auditorium to enhance the city's reputation, the £12 million, 2,499-capacity venue opened two years later. Sir Elton John was the first entertainer to help showcase the hall's hi-tech sound and lighting system, and a whole host of names from the worlds of classical, pop, jazz, rock and stand-up comedy have followed suit. The hall is also a hugely popular business venue and is regularly booked for major conferences, scientific lectures, exhibitions and product launches. Part of the same complex that also houses the Theatre Royal, the venue is situated on South Sherwood Street in the heart of the city centre.
