Gabrielle: R&B royalty still going strong

Born in 1970 and raised in Brockley, South London, Bobb started her musical career singing in West End clubs between jobs. Her big break came after 1993 single "Dreams" broke the record for the highest chart debut, with the spirited lyrics and luscious vocals helping it to dominate airwaves across the world. Fans were intrigued by her striking image - she sported an eyepatch on TV due to ptsosis - and with three further top 20 hits from album Find Your Way, Gabrielle was on her way to becoming Britain's biggest soul singer.

After a break of three years, Bobb made her return sans eyepatch with single "Rise", which featured a sample from Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heavens Door" Both the track and album of the same name went straight to the top of their respective charts, and Gabrielle was soon honoured for her talents with MOBOs for Best Single and Best Album, Ivor Novello awards for Outstanding Song Collection and Brit Awards for Best Newcomer and Best Female Vocalist.
