The Western Division and World Series glory
In 1901, a baseball franchise was founded in the nation's capital as the Washington Senators became one of the founding members of the new American League (AL) of Major League Baseball. The period between the world wars witnessed the emergence of the club, capturing the AL pennant in 1924 behind pitching phenom Walter Johnson and catcher Muddy Ruel, who figured prominently in Game 7 of the World Series against the New York Giants in which the Senators won, securing their first title. During the league expansion of 1961, the franchise relocated to Minneapolis, was renamed the Twins and won another pennant in 1965, however it was the 1980s that would immortalise many of the team's players. Never is this more evident than in the 1987 team line-up, which featured Hall of Famers Kirby Puckett, Bert Blyleven and ace pitcher Frank Viola. This all-star cast won the division by two games over the Kansas City Royals and then defeated the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals to win its second World Series title. Minnesota Twins light up the baseball diamond
The nucleus of the 1987 team was strengthened at key positions over time giving rise to the 1991 team, which quickly emerged as a serious contender during the season and won another AL title before facing Atlanta Braves for the baseball championship . Generally acknowledged as a World Series classic, the 1991 contest was another historic seven game edition where each team won all their home games and Game 7 was a pitching duel knotted at 0-0 before the Twins singled in the 10th inning to win their second and last baseball title as a member of the AL West. As a member of the AL Central, the Twins captured 6 division titles between 2000 and 2010, the year the franchise unveiled its new home, Target Field with a capacity of 40,000 seats. There are 25 former Senators/Twins who call the Hall of Fame home and the franchise can also claim 18 former AL batting champions, including Minnesota legend Puckett with a .318 lifetime average over 12 seasons.
