In 1901, a baseball franchise was founded in the nation's capital as the Washington Senators became one of the founding members of the new American League (AL) of Major League Baseball. The period between the world wars witnessed the emergence of the club, capturing the AL pennant in 1924 behind pitching phenom Walter Johnson and catcher Muddy Ruel, who figured prominently in Game 7 of the World Series against the New York Giants in which the Senators won, securing their first title.
